Is dry, cracked skin on your feet keeping you from wearing your favorite flip flops or open-toed shoes this summer? Dry skin can be very frustrating, but the good news is that it’s also very treatable. By adding a few extra steps to your at-home foot care routine, you can enjoy the rest of your summer with smooth, pretty feet.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Dry skin can occur anywhere on the body. It’s especially common in areas where there’s not a lot of moisture in the air. So, in certain cases, dry skin is simply caused by a lack of moisture in one’s skin.

However, it can sometimes be associated with a variety of other conditions, including:

  • Psoriasis

  • Atopic Dermatitis

How Do I Get Rid of It?

Once you’ve identified the cause of your dry skin, you can start taking the required steps to getting rid of it. If your dry skin has no outstanding medical cause, you can start softening it by washing your feet daily with an exfoliating scrub or gently rubbing off the dry skin with a pumice stone.

However, if your dry skin is being caused by a condition like athlete’s foot, then you’ll need to treat it with anti-fungal creams or have a foot doctor perform laser therapy on it.

How Do I Avoid It?

You can avoid dry skin and the conditions that cause it by:

  • Keeping your feet clean and dry

  • Avoiding walking without shoes

  • Wear breathable socks and shoes

The best way to avoid dry skin is to regularly see your local podiatrist. If you’re located in South Brooklyn, including Bensonhurst or Bath Beach, come see Dr. Argirios Mantzoukas of Bay Podiatry Associates. He can evaluate your foot skin and put you on a care plan to keep your feet moisturized all summer long. Make an appointment online or call (718)266-1986 today.
